Back In The Day Bakery Is Closing
I (Nichelle) met Cheryl Day my first week living here in Savannah over eight years ago. This week it has been announced the Back In The Day Bakery is closing after twenty two years and the last day will be Wednesday, February 14th. Cheryl and Griff were pioneers on 40th and Bull Street. The block, which is now called The Starland District, has developed a lot over the years. I hope the new owners of the building will be great stewards and neighbors.
Cheryl did one of our early The 31401 interviews and I want to share this quote.
It’s a beautiful city. I love living here. I like that Savannah is creative and growing. I wish more people from diverse backgrounds would stay here and connect with the community. -Cheryl Day
Be a Tourist: The Davenport House

The 1820’s house on Columbia Square began as a model home of sorts to showcase what master builder Isaiah Davenport could build for the wealthy elite in Savannah. But in the 1950’s, it was slated to be demolished for a parking garage. So seven local women formed the Historic Savannah Foundation, purchased the Davenport House, and started a movement to preserve and restore Savannah.
Currently the museum focuses on the years 1820 - 1827 of this 200+ year old federal-style home. And at the end of last year, the basement was transformed into the interpretive Urban Enslaved exhibit giving guests a moving display of the daily life of the enslaved workers who lived there.
Tours are Monday - Saturday starting every hour hour 10am-3:30pm and lasting a little over an hour. Tickets range from $10 for children and $15 for adults. Entrance is on Broughton through the former Kennedy Pharmacy.
