25th SCAD Savannah Film Festival
Celebrate a diverse range of films from student shorts to Hollywood blockbusters, independent movies to documentaries at theaters across downtown October 22nd-29th. Many showings include discussions, panels, and workshops with the likes of Ron Howard, Janelle Monáe, and Eddie Redmayne. While many viewings and passes have sold out, there are still some tickets available.
Indigenous Peoples’ Day
The second Monday of October has been celebrated as Indigenous Peoples’ Day since 1977. However, it was only last year when it became a federal proclamation. From an NPR article last year, Van Heuvelen, a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe from South Dakota, gave some guidance on how to get started:
"It can be a day of reflection of our history in the United States, the role Native people have played in it, the impacts that history has had on native people and communities, and also a day to gain some understanding of the diversity of Indigenous peoples.”
According to Native Land Digital, Savannah is located on Muscogee (Creek), Yamasee, and Guale land. Chief Tomochichi and the Yamacraw were instrumental in laying out roads for Savannah. Check out the timeline of the timeline of Tomochichi’s life via the Georgia Historical Society.
