Parking in Thomas Square
There are seven public parking garages in downtown Savannah. There are none in the Thomas Square neighborhood which includes the burgeoning Starland District. Every time there is a new business that opens in the Thomas Square neighborhood, the first question that residents ask is, "how will you account for parking?". The answer is often that people will walk or Uber. However, that is not realistic because there's not enough people in the neighborhood to support every restaurant, bar and performance space so they can be sustainable. People from the Southside, Pooler and even Richmond Hill come and patronize these small local businesses. Those people who drive into the neighborhood park on side streets which is actually residential parking. I have heard from so many of my neighbors about the complaining about the lack of parking. Thomas Square is becoming like a Brooklyn neighborhood in the fact that residents are often driving around at night to find a parking space on busy weekends.
I am not an urban planner, but I do care about how development is affecting the neighborhood. I did some research on shared parking, and I found this site, Moby Park. It appears that it is only available in Europe.
Shared parking could be a way to optimize the parking spaces in Savannah. Private parking owners such as universities (SCAD) and individuals can rent out their parking space when they don’t use it. This allows drivers to park their car at parking spaces that are so far not accessible for them. There is a parking garage at One West Victory on Victory Drive and Bull Street that is privately owned by SCAD. It would be great if that garage could be used to alleviate the parking strain on 40th, 41st and 42nd Streets. If using the parking garage at One West Victory is not possible, then the city should consider building a parking garage in the Thomas Square neighborhood. It may not be aesthetically pleasing but it is absolutely necessary.
Thank You Savannah Service Industry Workers
Savannah’s food scene is made possible first and foremost by those who work in the industry. Thank you for giving us so many great options to get out, not have to cook, and enjoy delicious food and drinks in our neighborhood. And thank you to the restaurant and bars that extend gratitude via specials. We’ve compiled those deals in our new Industry Specials guide on Instagram, as well updated our Happy Hour guide.
Also, don’t forget that Victory North is hosting an Industry Appreciation Dance Party this Tuesday, May 2nd 7-11:30pm.
