Summer Movie Fun
While watching movies at home may be the new normal, there’s something special of making the trek out to collectively watch a film.
The regal Lucas Theatre is currently hosting two summer series of Heroes & Villians (every other Thursday evening) and Disney Classics (every other Sunday afternoon). In the auditorium of the Savannah Cultural Arts Center (great sound, btw), Cinema Savannah hosts at least a monthly Friday night screening (usually an independent, foreign, or documentary film).
And in addition to the many cinemas across town (NCG off Victory offers alcohol and free drink and popcorn refills), there are a couple of drive-ins showing current blockbusters. About an hour drive away, there is the Highway 21 Drive In (Beaufort, SC) and the Jesup Drive-In.
The 31401 Interview with Lauren Puckett
What is your Savannahversary? How long have you lived here?
I moved to Savannah from Charlotte in September of 2017 for SCAD. I was coming in for my sophomore year.
What do you want people to know about you?
I just signed on as a resident artist at Dreamhouse Studios! I now sell my artwork in Starland Strange (17 West 41st Street) and host workshops for the public. For example, I have a candle wax painting class coming up.
What are two things you love about Savannah and one thing you wish were better?
I love that Savannah is a small town and I see someone I know almost every time I go out. It’s also so walkable for me and my new puppy!! The Eastern Wharf is becoming a place I go a lot, especially because you can be on the river without all of the tourists . Yet. I know Savannah is a historic town, but I wish it was more accessible for people who use wheelchairs. I didn’t think about this much until my aunt started using one, but I think it could make a huge difference for people. The recent Broughton street updates are a great start :)
What do you think SCAD and the City of Savannah can do to get SCAD graduates to stay in Savannah after graduation?
SCAD does a lot when you’re in school, but post grad I think there could be more networking events. For a lot of jobs, especially in the entertainment industry, it’s about who you know.
