Black History Month in Savannah
It would be impossible to encapsulate the history of Black people in Savannah in a paragraph, but it is important to know that Black History is Savannah history. The city was founded in 1733 with three notable restrictions: no lawyers, no alcohol and no slavery. The ban on slavery was later repealed in 1750, but it is imperative to note that Savannah was different than most cities in the south. Fast forward to January 12, 1865, where Savannah was the place of a historic meeting between General Sherman and Black leaders. At the Green Meldrim House, they discussed what the enslaved people wanted and this is when the “40 acres and a mule” request was first mention. I highly recommend checking out the historic markers all around Savannah, as well as taking a tour of Beach Institute to increase your knowledge of the rich cultural history of Savannah. If you want a guided tour, then reserve a walking tour via Footprints of Savannah.
