It’s the last day of September and the high today in Savannah was 89F. The warm weather contributed to the severity of Hurricane Helene, the French-named storm that has wreaked havoc across Florida, Georgia, The Carolinas and Tennessee. Merde!
Here in Savannah, many residents are weathering life without electricity. The outage map for Georgia Power is weird. It looks like it was gerrymandered with amorphous shapes. Reading the Savannah Reddit is like reading rants of the haves and the have-nots. People have seen neighbors across the street with lights on while their homes are hot and dark.
Georgia Power has texted me more in the last couple of days than the Harris Walz campaign. A lot of people have gotten a text that power will be restored by October 1st. I hope so.
In the meantime check out this list of businesses who are open, have Wi-Fi and charging stations. I got this list from Savannah Magazine. Chatham Emergency Management has opened Cooling Centers. I highly recommend going to Float and Flora and Fauna in the mornings for a quiet spot to get coffee and do a little work. Tip well if you’re using any restaurant as a work space.
What is going on with Chatham Area Transit? The buses and the dot Shuttle are still not operational and I received a text alert that service is suspended tomorrow, the first day of the month. This is ridiculous. People need to get to work, school, doctor’s appointments and run errands. I expect Mayor Johnson will field questions about that during his weekly press conference.
October is the best month in Savannah, so let’s turn the tide.
